'DEATHS LINKED TO MATTRESS BACTERIA - March 2006
Up to half of cot deaths might be caused by a bug which breeds in babies' mattresses, UK researchers have claimed.
The bacteria staphylococcus aureus, which is related to MRSA, multiplies quickly in cot mattress foam preying on newborn immune systems.
The study, which was carried out by De Montford University, showed that 50% of cot deaths have elevated levels of the bacteria in their system. They do not claim this accounts for every single death but the data is stacking up.
In the same week the North West Lung Centre in Manchester produced a study showing not only are our mattresses and pillows full of dust mites but we also have microscopic fungi right under our noses. The fungi which feed on human skin and dust mite droppings are infesting our pillows, the study showed we are sleeping with more than a million spores from at least 16 different types of fungi. The discovery could be highly significant for asthma, Aids, cancer and transplant patients who can contract potentially fatal lung infections from these spores.

The cleaning of mattresses is becomming increasingly popular in the Uk having been developed 16 years ago in Germany.
